Using Your Body’s Natural Healing Power to Improve or Eliminate Chronic Tendonitis
Impact Orthopaedics has become one of the first offices in the Triangle area to utilize an in-office ultrasound to aid its Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection treatment, a breakthrough non-surgical therapy for those struggling with chronic tendonitis of the elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, foot or other areas.
Impact Orthopaedics has performed PRP treatments without the device for the last 18 months and has received much positive patient feedback. The ultrasound device was acquired to further increase the patient success rate by enabling the provider to directly visualize the damaged tissue and more precisely guide the injection.
If you have been struggling with chronic tendonitis in your elbow, shoulder, foot or other areas, Impact Orthopaedics can now use your own body’s natural healing power to help reduce and even possibly eliminate your symptoms.
In order to understand the benefits of this new technology called the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection, it’s important to first understand the physiology behind your pain. Dr. Robert Jones at Impact Orthopaedics in North Raleigh describes tendonitis as an area of chronic inflammation or tissue degradation where the tendon attaches to the bone (muscles turn into tendons and tendons attach muscle to bone). This area becomes weakened and broken down over time, often from repetitive activity or injury.
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections use your own blood to help stop the inflammation and actually heal your tendon. By taking a small sample of your blood and spinning it down in a centrifuge we are able to isolate Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) which can then be injected directly into the inflamed tendon. Because the PRP is made from your own blood there is no chance of rejection from the body, it’s just accelerating healing naturally. Your PRP will contain valuable bioactive proteins, including growth factors that are necessary to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. Although the treatment regimen varies from patient to patient, a total of 3(three) injections spaced 3-4 weeks apart is required for maximal improvement of your symptoms.
Dr. Jones often uses PRP injections after conservative treatments such as rest, ice, activity modifications, anti-inflammatories, physical therapy and/or cortisone injections have failed. Some patients will receive great benefit from conservative treatment and would therefore not be appropriate candidates for PRP injections. However, if your tendonitis has not responded to these treatments or has returned multiple times over the years, you may be a candidate for PRP. A PRP injection is a non-surgical therapy that can actually heal the tendon and provide long-term relief.
